Questions

What is the difference between SRT and VTT?

Almost only the details. VTT starts with a WEBVTT line, drops the cue numbers and uses a dot in times (00:00:01.500) where SRT uses a comma. VTT can also carry position and styling settings.

Why do web players need VTT?

The HTML5 <track> element only reads WebVTT. Load an SRT there and the browser shows nothing. Convert it and it just works.

My SRT is messy. Will it still convert?

Most likely. Odd line endings, a byte order mark, missing blank lines and dots instead of commas are all fine. If no subtitle is found, the page says so.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Nothing is uploaded. The file is read and converted by your browser, on your device. It even works offline once the page has loaded.
